Penn State - Michigan

Although both teams play in the Big Ten, Penn State - Michigan has not been quite as big a rivalry as some of the Wolverine's other conference opponents. Michigan has pretty much owned the Nittany Lions, winning seven of their first ten meetings starting in 1993. Of course, every time these two school meet on the gridiron, it is a clash of a pair of the NCAA's most prestigious programs. Of course, Michigan can lay claim to more than 40 conference titles and 11 national championships. The Lions have a rich tradition of gridiron excellence as well, thanks largely to their legendary head coach, Joe Paterno. Paterno has led the university to a pair of national championships and is the second winningest coach in Division I-A history. Despite a few ups and downs, with Paterno at the helm, the Nittany Lions have been a dominant force in the landscape of college football.

Penn State - Michigan: The 2005 Game

The 2005 Penn State - Michigan game, the 11th meeting between the two schools, was a dramatic one. Penn State entered the game undefeated, while the Wolverines were 3-3 overall and just 1-2 in the Big Ten. Yet, thanks to freshman wide receiver Mario Manningham's touchdown reception with no time remaining on the clock, Michigan pulled off the 27-25 upset. Manningham had 3 receptions for 49 yards and caught two touchdown passes on the day. Despite the fact that Penn State went on to win a share of the Big Ten title, the Nittany Lions failed in their bid for perfection. They finished the campaign with a single defeat -- that handed to them by the Wolverines. Of course, they will have plenty of opportunities to try and avenge the loss, as UM and PSU play each other in 2008, 2007 and 2008. The 2008 and 2008 games will take place at State College, Pa. while the 2007 tilt will occur within the confines of the Big House in Ann Arbor.
