Coach Lloyd Carr

Michigan Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr was hired in 1995, and during his tenure he has been one of the winningest coaches in the NCAA. He is currently fourth among all active Division I-A football coaches, and the Wolverines have won more than 75-percent of the games they have played under him. He has compiled five ten-win seasons and was just the eight coach in Big Ten history to win five or more conference championships. Furthermore, Carr is one of just four Michigan coaches (the others being Fielding Yost, Bennie Oosterbaan and Bo Schembechler) to have coached Michigan for more than 100 career games. He guided the Wolverines to New Years Day Bowl Games in nine of his first ten seasons with the team, and won Michigan's 11th national championship in 1997. Further, Carr done much to support the sport of football, the university and the community of Ann Arbor. He founded the Women’s Football Academy, serves on the NCAA Rules Committee, and is a member of the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees.

Coach Lloyd Carr: The Early Years

Before taking the reigns as Michigan coach, Lloyd Carr enjoyed a playing career. He was an all-state quarterback in high school in 1962, and was the reserve quarterback for the Missouri Tigers for three years, including the 1966 team that won the Sugar Bowl. He then transferred to Northern Michigan University in 1968, leading the Wildcats to an unbeaten season and later earning a master's degree in education. He started his coaching career as an assistant at Nativity High in Detroit in 1968 and 1969 and Belleville (Mich.) High School from 1970 to 1973 before finally landing his first head coaching job, at John Glenn High School in Westland, Michigan. In 1975, he was named the Regional Class A Coach of the Year, and the following season, he made the jump to collegiate football and Eastern Michigan. After two seasons there and two more at the University of Illinois, he joined Schembechler's staff at Michigan, where he would remain until being promoted to head coach in 1995.
